DATAGAME
PROJECT

Description:

The DataGame project addresses an important challenge of adult education providers and professionals in adult education: how to deal adequately and in compliance with the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation which went into effect on May 25, 2018, but has not really been fully implemented in many adult education institutions yet.

The challenge has even grown with the transition from classroom teaching to online learning since the outbreak of COVID19. The wide-spread use of online platforms and communication tools pose new data privacy and safety questions. Many adult education professionals have not been prepared for dealing adequately with them, as they had not been online educators before the pandemic.

The project aims to facilitate a harmonised and consistent compliance to data protection regulations and standards throughout the European adult education landscape, including informal education providers that work mostly with free-lance educators and therefore find it difficult to comply with quality standards.

Activities:

The project is dedicated to the implementation of a certain series of activities:

  • Raise adult educators’ awareness of data privacy and safety issues in (online) adult learning
  • Describe the difference between data privacy and safety in adult (online) learning
  • Communicate the importance of balancing innovations in learning with data privacy and safety demands
  • Evoke understanding of the role of adult educators in protecting adult learners’ data
  • Enable adult educators to recognise and implement the key components required to establish a safe and protected digital environment
  • Motivate adult educators and engage them in complying data privacy and safety issues in their daily professional practice

Results:

  • The brochure addresses adult educators and managerial staff of adult education institutions. It gives a concise introduction to the data privacy and safety issues (online) adult learning is confronted with, makes aware of the necessity to take action at institutional and personal level, and describes the knowledge and competences required,
  • The game itself is the central outcome of the project. In video-based scenarios adult educators are made acquainted with legal obligations and personal privacy and safety needs of learners, are provided with learning content which develops their practical digital competences to implement appropriate steps in their professional practice,
  • This result contains tools useful for implementing data privacy and safety measures in their (online) teaching practice. It also comprises teaching materials which enhance adult learners’ privacy and safety issues.
